There is a very special person who is escaping a bad situation. That person is Vidyut. She is a blogger from Mumbai. And a real one. This is a strong woman who blogs about a huge number of issues facing her society, and ours, and the world in general. Among other things, she has been a strong proponent of Slutwalk Delhi.
She has been very open about her struggles with her alcoholic husband. This is a man who has not been physically violent, but has been verbally abusive and threatening. Many people are likely to say “so why doesn’t she just leave, then”. Problem is, things aren’t that simple. They never are. Especially when there is a young child. Especially in a society that shames women even more than ours does here.
Why doesn’t she just leave?
The most recent episode, for me, started with a tweet, simply
shortly followed by
Husband in temper
This is a person who has a lot of people who care, and there was a flood of concerned tweets, me among them. Fortunately, this really was a trigger point. She finally decided to leave him.
I was so impressed with how she set things up, in particular how she made arrangements with local friends about how, if she suddenly went silent, that they were to assume the worst and call the Police.
The best way to find out about it is to read her summary of it here. She has been adamant to be very public about this – that she will not be shamed by what has been done to her. And hopefully, others will be inspired by her actions.
Anyway, I guess all I wanted was a shout-out to a pretty impressive person.
