TW in the following post for tweets about rape.
[Extra – added by author 02/07/2011]: After following this conversation, I started following an amazing Indian woman, Vidyut, on Twitter. Her strength and passion has really impressed me – in particular about the Delhi Slutwalk, but also with her views in general. I have added a link to her site in my Luscious Links category (because it isn’t just a blog).
After enoying Slutwalk Aotearoa – Wellington edition – I started following the #slutwalk hashtag on Twitter to see what else was happening, how people were responding to it, and in part to check out the detractors.
Note – in the following Twitter exchanges, I have removed the handles of the person I was referring to. I have retained mine only because I have the right to release my information. If you really want to know, I’ll tell you, but you can easily find out using the hashtags.
I saw this one that stood out for me:
I am so tired of #SlutWalk that I’ll start my own #JockeyWalk to bring some change against the formal dress code we males are forced to don.
People with #boxers#shorts#loincloth or anything that covers male genitalia are invited. #SlutWalk girls can come too.
I mean – shit – likening the purpose of slutwalk to being “forced” to wear certain clothes.
As I often do, when I read tweets like this, I check to see if it is just something silly, or if it is reflective of a really shitty attitude. A quick flip through earlier tweets revealed:
@[name withheld] I just raped churan virtually. Head over to sushant’s update referring “status & money” before my epic comment gets deleted
That was it for me. I couldn’t help but tweet
I am so tired of asshats like @[name withheld] who just dont get it and skite about “virtually raping” people #slutwalk #forcedtowear #bullshit
Well, didn’t that just create a shitstorm. Obviously, this self-righteous dude didn’t take kindly to having his ignorance called.
@GraveyDice what do you know about me, my country, condition of women in my country or even my timeline, to make conclusions about me???
@GraveyDice dumb girls like you who call mature people asshats on the basis of gender don’t realize what harm they are doing by #SlutWalk
@GraveyDice have you ever given a though that by organizing #SlutWalk world over you are actually destroying work of great feminists
@GraveyDice feminists who devoted their life for upliftment of females from being an object to a human in a male centric society #SlutWalk
@GraveyDice No wonder females should have freedom to wear anything they want but by #SlutWalk you are spreading wrong idea
@GraveyDice by organizing #SlutWalk you all are just emphasizing that to be heard in this world, females need to strip.
@GraveyDice you called me an asshat but by #SlutWalk you are yourself demeaning yourself and lowering status of womenfolk in society.
I got 3 followers today on #twitter within an hour and was subjected to flak by a Washington based #SlutWalk supporter.
And I would have given him points for phrases like “feminists who devoted their life for upliftment of females from being an object to a human in a male centric society “. Points off for “girls”, for presuming I am one (because I support Slutwalk???), and for phrases like “womenfolk”. But then I saw:
A bitch from Washington called me asshat after reading my #SlutWalk tweets. #GraveyDice does she even know what I was saying???
Way to prove my point, dude. Yeah – I know exactly what you were saying. You were saying “Yay – all power to women. But you are still less than me, and you can do whatever you want, just so long as you don’t tell me I’m wrong”. So yeah – I only know a little about you, a little about the condition of women in your country, but you are still missing the fucking point. How fucking pointy does it have to be??? (Obscure Buffy reference there).
Rape is NEVER ok, neither is making comments like that.
I hope to the Flying Spaghetti Monster that people will always call me out when I make a douchebag comment, or speak without thinking. At least to the point that it is hurtful – you should hear me at home muttering nonsense away to myself.
