Also wanted to thank you so much for everything you did with Slutwalk. I’d like to personally thank you for your courage in telling your story at the walk, for sharing your pain. It really did have me in tears, but as I have said previously, they are good tears because they remind me how much I am a part of the rest of this world.

This guy was my ob/gyn when I lived in Timaru (I know, I know. Note the past tense). And he was, if possible, an even bigger douchecanoe than he comes across in this article. I wanted to see a gynaecologist because of my FUCKING CRIPPLING period pain that is nearly bloody constant, not just once a month (I am one of these people Alasdair Thomson was so worried about). And I was told that most women get period pain, so what was I whinging about. I was berated for not taking stronger painkillers, after I explained that the pain is so bad I THROW UP EVERYTHING ANYWAY. My fiancee (at the time) was referred to several times as my ‘little boyfriend’. When I raised concerns about my fertility in relation to my period issues, I was told I was ‘too young to be bothering with that’ (I was 18. I have since found out that I am infertile). He was just generally the biggest fucking ass I have ever had the misfortune to have in charge of my healthcare and every time I see his name cropping up over this at the moment, I want to fucking punch something.

Three days of articles on the issue before they finally published one saying “hang on, we’ve actually got some research that says otherwise..”. And today there was an article about people over 40 having sex and at the end the author slipped in a bit about the promiscuous ladies topic by citing a different study that apparently contradicts the one from the fourth article( which talked about the Dunedin Stud). Except that this study (from Chch) that apparently supports the idea that women are promiscuous shows “half the men in the study had at least 15 sexual partners by age 30, and half the women had at least 10 partners”, which suggests that it is men who are more promiscuous than women, and DOESN’T support Makary’s views. Fail. I bet there won’t be any follow-up articles saying”oh no, teh menz are so slutty, we’ve got to do something!”, though….Sigh.

Still, that’s the Herald for you, a nice old-fashioned right-wing conservative platform…

It seems there is an increasing attitude in the mainstream media to use issues like this to generate vitriolic arguments, bringing out the hate and violence seemingly just to get page hits.

And yes – his language betrays him. I find it appalling that a doctor would behave in such a manner. Especially his open declaration of wanting to stigmatise people who might actually need help (referring to binge-drinkers here). Stigmatising behaviour is equivalent to stigmating the people engaging in it.

Whatever the hell happened to “first do no harm”.

So yeah, this guy seems like a horrible man. And also: using a Durex survey to back up your claims is major fail. A durex survey is very unlikely to be an example of good science and probably isn’t representative of what’s actually happening in the world.
